when you can’t see, everything is harder…
A child sits at the back of a classroom in rural Sierra Leone.
The blackboard is a blur.
She thinks she is not clever.
In reality, she just needs glasses.
A grandmother can no longer thread a needle.
She cannot see the faces of her grandchildren clearly.
She believes this is simply part of getting older.
It isn’t.
She needs glasses.
A farmer struggles to see his tools clearly.
A trader miscounts money.
A tailor makes mistakes in her stitching.
A nurse hesitates while measuring medicine.
Not because their condition is untreatable.
Not because it is complicated.
But simply because they cannot access a basic eye test and a pair of glasses.
In rural Sierra Leone, this is everyday life for thousands of people.
Poor eyesight slowly steals independence and dignity.
But the solution is often simple.
That’s why we exist.
who we are
eyesight4africa is a small charity with a very simple mission:
Bring eye care to people who would otherwise go without it.
We work alongside local eye care workers in rural communities, helping them reach people who are too poor or too remote to access help.
We don’t drop in and disappear.
We build something that lasts.
We train, support and strengthen local services so that eye care becomes part of the community — not a one-off event.
Our model is simple:
Those who can afford glasses pay a fair price, which helps make glasses affordable for those who can’t.
It’s a social business approach that protects dignity and creates long-term sustainability
No waste.
No complexity.
Just practical help that keeps going
And because we are small, every donation matters.
Every donation is personal.
Every penny you give goes directly to the work in Sierra Leone.
meet Lansana
He is the only optician serving many thousands of people in his district.
“My name is Lansana Lahun. I was born, live and work in Kailahun District in Sierra Leone.
I provide eye tests and glasses at the government hospital.
But most people in my district live too far away or cannot afford the transport to reach us. So many thousands of people remain without help.
Poor eyesight here means you cannot learn properly, you cannot work well, and you may remain poor for the rest of your life.
I am the only person providing eye tests and glasses in this whole district. Unless we reach these communities, many people will never receive the glasses they need. Some may even lose their sight from eye diseases that go undetected.
eyesight4africa is helping me reach these people.
Every single penny you donate goes directly to this work
Thank you for helping us make this possible.
Together, we are helping the world to see.”
— Lansana Lahun, Optometric Technician, Kailahun
what your gift can do
A simple pair of glasses can mean:
· A child reading clearly for the first time
· A farmer returning to work
· A grandmother seeing her grandchildren’s faces
· A family no longer dependent on others
Sight changes everything.
And for many people, the solution really is as simple as a proper eye test and a pair of glasses.
